As we all know, there are many strange and wonderful variations to the game we all love. Sometimes, their purpose is purely recreational, however, sometimes there are variations used for educational purposes. One such interesting variation has been created by the Food Standards Agency of Northern Ireland who hope to use special bingo cards to promote healthy eating.
In this variety of the game the numbers have been replaced by a series of phrases, that promote healthy eating. When a phrase gets called out, you must match that phrase with the corresponding phrase on your bingo card. Moreover, you see lots of lovely pictures of healthy food to eat, and little facts about that food and why it’s beneficial.
Although the average person is probably going to be disinclined to participate in such a game, it would be a great idea if teachers adopted it as a fun activity. Primary school children would benefit greatly from this, particularly now when more and more often children are being subject a barrage of junk food which is not beneficial in anyway.
It is difficult to estimate if making children play such a game would really help them want to try out other healthier food options. Nonetheless, It can serve as an excellent educational system. More often than not, many small children, have never seen a vegetable before let alone eaten one. Understandably there are other factors for why this is. Often junk food is cheaper, and parents on tight budgets will be inclined to by cheaper less healthy meals than more expensive ones. Also as always, children always prefer sweet things over vegetables. So it is of no surprise if this bingo game never works!
